How to Install a Canvas Window Awning How to Install a Canvas Window Awning
Canvas window awnings provide interest and color to the outside of a house, while still being a functional addition to the home. Ready to install awning kits can be purchased through the yellow pages or from the local home improvement store. A kit will cost less than half the price as you would pay to have the awning professionally installed. By doing it yourself not only will you save all the money, but you can view your handwork daily for a sense of pride in your home.
Step 1 - Before Purchase
Before ordering or purchasing the awning kit, use a tape measure to get window specifications and insure the correct size and shape to fit your needs. Many manufacturers offer different decorative edges to choose from.
Step 2 - Mounting Hardware
Locate the studs which the awning will be drilled into. It is very important that the awning be attached to masonry studs or joists so that wind, rain, and snow do not damage the side of the house when they move the awning. Use a stud finder to locate the studs and snap a chalk line before drilling. Check the chalk line for level. Mark the center of the window within the chalk line and proceed to drill pilot holes before mounting the hardware firmly to the house.
Step 3 - Assembling the Back Bar
Assemble the rear of the awning as per the manufacturer instructions. This usually entails fastening the two back bar pipes together and aligning the aluminum channel. Place the back bar into the mounting hardware and clamp it down firmly.
Step 4 - Attaching the Awning
Be sure hands and the area is clean before handling the awning. Slide the rope attached to the back of the awning through the channel within the back bar. If your awning comes with snaps, snap the back side of the awning around the back bar. Be careful not to completely tighten down the awning until installation is complete or the awning could be ripped. Assemble the front bar and slide it into the front pocket of the awning or snap it into place.
Step 5 - Attaching the Rafters
Assemble the diagonal side rafters. Hold the awning out in front to slide the rafters into place along the sides. Assistance might be helpful to have someone hold the awning while the rafters are set into place. Sometimes raising the awning above level can be helpful to slide or snap the rafters into the awning. Loosely place a nut into the back bar to hold the rafters in place. Do not tighten the nut down until installation is complete.
Step 6 - Attaching the Side Support Arms
Attach the side support arms first to the front bar and rafter with a loosely fastened nut. Attach the side support arm to the rear and begin to tighten the nuts down. Go back and tighten down the front nut as well as the nuts on the rafters. Once all nuts have been securely fastened, the installation is complete.
