How to Install a Crankshaft Balancer
Your car’s crankshaft balancer provides balanced counterweight to both pistons and rods along the crankshaft. Installing a crankshaft balancer is rather a technical job but if you love cars and you have some working knowledge in automotive, you can easily get the job done. To help you install a crankshaft balancer in your vehicle, follow these steps.
Step 1 – Park Your Car and Let the Engine Cool Off
Park your car then place a wooden block on both the rear tires to prevent car from rolling while you are working. Wait until the car engine has cooled off completely before you disconnect the battery terminals and start working on the engine.
Step 2 – Locate the Crankshaft Assembly
Set the transmission to neutral. Prop up the front side of the car then remove the tire as well as the splash shield to reveal the crankshaft assembly. Remove the engine top cover and get ready to work.
Step 3 – Check the Position of Crankshaft Balancer and Install the Flywheel Holding Tool
Note the position of the crankshaft balancer. Install the Flywheel Holding Tool. Utilize the applicable bolt for installation. Tighten at 37 foot-pounds of force. Mark the new balancer on the same position as that of the old balancer by using the old as the reference. Put on balancer weights in the same position as that of the old balancer weight locations. Align the balancer scribe mark to the same mark on the crankshaft. Position the balancer to the end of the crankshaft in a straight position prior to its installation.
Step 4 – Install the Crankshaft Balancer
Make an assembly of the threaded rod, washer, nut, and installer tool. Plug in the smaller tip of the installer into the balancer front. Take a wrench and hold the hex head of the threaded rod. Take a second wrench and turn the nut of the installation tool in clockwise direction until balancer is set into the crankshaft. Take out the tool and reverse the installation tool. Fix the bigger end of the installer tool against the face of the balancer. Get a wrench to hold the hex end of the threaded rod. Use another wrench to turn the installation tool in a clockwise direction until the balancer is fit into the crankshaft. Take out the installation tool from the balancer.
Mount the crankshaft balancer bolt which was originally installed. Tighten it to 240 foot-pounds of force. Allow indentation of the crankshaft nose by 2.4 to 4.48mm. Review if the balancer is correctly installed to the proper dimensions. If not done correctly, re-install the crankshaft installer tool and redo the installation activity.
Step 5 – Finishing Up
Put on the bolt of the new crankshaft balancer. Make two passes on the tightening of the bolt. First, do it at 37 foot-pounds of force straight, then make a second pass at 140-degrees to tighten it using the angle meter before you remove the Flywheel Holding Tool.
