A door gasket is a necessary component of any pellet stove. Pellet stoves are interior heating units design to heat small to medium spaces. They are commonly found in kitchens, workshops and basements. Although most people assume using a wood pellet stove for heating is a thing of the past, they are still widely used in areas where heating sources such as natural gas or fuel oil are not readily available. Also, wood pellet stoves are often used as secondary heating in the event that the main source of heating goes out. A pellet stove works the same as a traditional wood burning stove, but uses small 1/2 inch compressed wood pellets as the fuel source. Compressed wood is used to make the pellets burn slower than solid wood and provides more fuel efficiency than a gas or electric heater. Pellet stoves, like any other heating unit, requires regular maintenance. Door gasket seals on the stove need to be replaced periodically for safe operation of the unit. If the door gasket is damaged or worn, toxic carbon monoxide gas can leak into the air. Installing a new door gasket seal on a pellet stove is easy and inexpensive to do.
Step 1 - Removing the Door
If the door of the wood pellet stove has trim, remove trim using a screwdriver. Set trim and screws aside to be reattached at the end of the project. Once the trim is removed open the door completely and remove by lifting the door from the hinges. If the door is difficult to remove, move the door back and forth while lifting up to loosen. Place the door on a level covered surface with the inside facing up.
Step 2 - Removing the Old Gasket
Gently slide the putty knife under the old gasket to release it from the door. Use the putty knife to remove any gasket cement left on the door's surface. Soak a lint-free cloth with cement removing solvent and wipe over the surface to clean any residue remaining on the door.
Step 3 - Installing New Gasket
Apply gasket cement to door using the applicator included in bottle. Starting at the corner, place the new gasket on the cement pressing gently around the perimeter. With the gasket in place, trim any excess using a sharp utility knife. Wipe away any extra gasket cement that seeps out with a clean lint free cloth. Allow door to dry at least 30 minutes before reinstalling on wood pellet stove.
Step 4 - Placing the Door
Align the door hinge pins with the hinge holes on the stove and slide into place. Close and latch the door. Place the door trim back on the door and fasten using the screws removed from the door and a screwdriver. Examine the door to ensure the gasket has formed an airtight seal.
