A carport makes for a great alternative to expensive garage additions but to accommodate two cars you will need to have a double carport. A double carport can be installed so that it is directly attached to the home but they can also be a freestanding building. These carports are not very difficult to install but they can take some time and you may need help but the following article will provide an overview of how you do it yourself.

Step 1 – Know the Kit

Installing a double carport hasn’t been easier since companies have begun to produce and sell kits. You’ll receive four metals that look like light trusses, screws, bolts and brackets. You’ll also receive the canopy panels and all of the supports. The instruction sheet is an invaluable tool so read it through several times.

Step 2 – Excavate the Base

To make the double carport more secure it’s a good idea to create a concrete base. The standard size for a double carport is 18-feet wide by 22-feet long. Use the tape measure, stakes and twine to mark the area off and then remove the soil to a depth of 2 to 4 inches; removing rocks and roots. Tamp it down. Make sure the ground is level adjusting as necessary by adding or removing dirt and tamping it down. Measure the dimensions of the legs and then mark them off at each corner. Dig a hole 8 to 10 inches deep.

Step 3 – Install the Supports and Floor

Place the legs in the corners and then fill the holes halfway with gravel. Fill the rest of the site with a single layer of gravel. Mix the concrete in the wheelbarrow according to the package using a rake. Pour the concrete using a hoe to spread it out as well as to smooth it until it level with the top of the ground. Allow the concrete to set for at least a day.

Step 4 – Canopy Supports

Once the concrete has dried the double carport canopy can be installed. These tend to be in several pieces which all look the same. They span the length and width of the double carport. The instructions with the kit will explain in better detail for the kit that you have. You will begin with both ends lining up the bolt and screw holes and then fastening it in place. There will be at least two central supports which are installed the same way.

Step 5 – Install the Canopy

The roof of the double carport may be the simplest to install. They will typically be in sections that are as wide as each support. If there are four supports there will be four panels; two for each side. Start with one side and line up the holes and screw it in place. The second panel will typically overlap the first but it is installed the same way. Repeat with the second side of the double carport.
