How to Install a Fold-Down Table in Your Laundry Room

A fold down table is something that can really come in handy in your laundry room. You will find that getting one that will fold up into the wall whenever you are not using it will keep space in the room and not make it seem so small. Having a table will allow you to easily fold and iron your clothes without having to leave your laundry room or bend over uncomfortably.

Step 1 - Measure

The first thing that you are going to have to do is get the measurements for your laundry room so that you will know how much room you can comfortably have for your fold down table. You will of course want enough room so that you can actually use it, but you also want to make sure that it is not going to overcrowd your room. Use your measuring tape to see about how far out it can go and write down the measurements. Also take note of the height of the table so that it is comfortable.

Step 2 – Wall

Write down the dimensions on the wall with a pencil. Use a level so you can draw where it will go. Cut the drywall between the studs using your drywall saw. Make sure that you get the holes measured between each of your studs. The ripped plywood needs to be cut according to whatever your measurements are.

Step 3 – Box

You will need to get a pneumatic staple gun and some glue so that you can build 2 boxes with your shelves. The boxes need to be connected with a center trim using a strip of plywood. This will also help to bridge the stud that is in between the holes as well as the primary attachment point. The nail holes can be filled with wood putty. Make sure that you get the wall insert painted and sanded before you continue.

Step 4 – Insert

To install the insert, set it into the wall and make sure that it is level. Get your finish nails to completely secure it. Touch up and sand the area once you are finished with it.

Step 5 – Table

Get your plywood measured and cut for the table that you will need. Make sure that it is the length that you wanted it to be and that the width is correct as well. Sand your plywood down until it is smooth and paint or stain it as you see fit.

Step 6 – Frame

The frame needs to be about ¼ of an inch between your frame and your box on every side. You will need to do this so that there is no friction once you fold the table down. Cut with a miter saw at 45-degree angles. Connect the 2 frames once you have assembled them. Nail and glue them together, sand, paint and prime them.
