How to Install a Furnace Blower Motor

Installing a furnace blower motor is not a very easy task, but it is not an impossible one either. There are times when you will need to install a new motor for your furnace. Motors eventually get worn out and should be replaced.

You can buy the new motor from a furnace repair shop or you can search online and buy it. Many dealers have online stores and will also deliver the motor to your home. With the right set of tools and this guide, you can install the furnace blower motor and save money.

Step 1 - Turn off the Power Supply

Turn off the power supply and disconnect the power connection to the motor from the power supply outlet.

Step 2 - Unpack the New Motor

Unpack the new furnace blower motor carefully and check if there are any damages. Check the v-belt for any cracks. Sometimes cracks may form in the new belt if it remains too long on the shelf in the warehouse.

Step 3 - Remove the Panel

Use a screwdriver to remove the panel on the furnace. There should be four or six screws that need to be removed to open the panel. Remove the screws and the panel and place it aside.

Step 4 - Remove the Mounting Bolts

Use the wrench to loosen the mounting bolts; these bolts hold the motor to the furnace frame. You will need to use either the ½ inch or the 7/16 inch end wrenches.

Step 5 - Remove the Old V-belt

Once the bolts have been loosened, push the motor in the direction of the fan and remove the v-belt.

Step 6 - Remove the Motor

Remove the four bolts and keep them aside. Unplug the power assembly from the motor and remove the motor.

Step 7 - Install the New Motor

Mount the new motor and connect the power plug assembly to the motor.

Step 8 - Install the Four Bolts

Place the four bolts and tighten them slightly. Once the bolts are in place, install the v-belt over the fan motor and the pulleys on the motor shaft.

Step 9 - Tighten the Bolts

Use the wrench and tighten the bolts. You must pull back on the motor while tightening the bolts; this will add tension to the belt. If the belt has the correct tension, it will enable the fan to run properly.

Step 11 – Replace the Panel

Replace the panel you removed earlier and fasten it with the screws.

Step 12 – Finish

Connect the furnace fan to the power outlet and turn on the mains from the main panel. Turn on the furnace fan and check the fan. It should be running smoothly. You can set the thermostat and let the furnace run for a while, but a few minutes would suffice.
