A motorcycle kill switch is used either to maintain or disable the connection to the ignition circuit. The purpose of a motorcycle kill switch is to prevent theft of the bike. A side benefit is that a motorcycle kill switch may lower your insurance. This type of device is not overly difficult to install, and the article below will show you how.

Step 1 – Ignition Wires

The majority of motorcycles are set up the same way. The ignition wires lead from the motor to the bike ignition. Use the service manual and the included diagram to locate these wires.

Step 2 – Disconnect the Wires

A motorcycle kill switch is made to be used with a smaller motor. Either unscrew the wires to the ignition or cut and then strip them. Some kill switch devices have connections on both ends. For these, you will cut the wires in the center and strip the ends off both sets of wires.

Step 3 – Install the Motorcycle Kill Switch

Place the negative wires to the negative contacts and the positive wires to the positive contacts. Test that the motorcycle kill switch works and then solder the wires in place.
