How to Install a Motorcycle Luggage Rack

The best way to carry stuff when using your motorcycle is to install a motorcycle luggage rack. This nifty device is designed to withstand a considerable amount of weight without affecting the overall look and performance of your motorcycle. Most bikes have a rear luggage rack as standard equipment, but sport or naked bikes are devoid of such an option. A motorcycle luggage rack will increase the functionality of your motorcycle and will offer the capability to carry saddlebags or other devices to secure all your belongings.

A motorcycle accessory shop should be consulted when in the need for a luggage rack, but online retailers also offer a range of luggage rack models with a friendly price tag. Sport bike owners prefer a motorcycle rack that is easy to install and remove. It should also be light and strong enough to carry weight.

Step 1 - Preparation

Engage the motorcycle stand and work in a well lit area. Wipe the seat with a soft cloth to remove dust and dirt prior to installation.

Step 2 - Remove the Seat

While this procedure may be unnecessary, other motorcycle makes and models will benefit most from the installation of a luggage rack by removing the seat. Use a socket wrench or screwdriver to remove the seat. With sport bikes and other applicable models, you may be able to just raise or open the seat.

Step Three - Install Velcro Strips

Velcro strips are part of the package and may come in predetermined sizes according to make and model. Thread the Velcro strips through the luggage rack. Make sure that no part of the Velcro strip is tangled or twisted in the process.

Step Four - Put the Rack on the Seat

Carefully slide the luggage rack onto the back of the seat and check for proper fit. Secure the luggage rack by adjusting the Velcro strips under the seat. Be sure not to over tighten or pull excessively on the strips. This will just result in premature deterioration of the Velcro strip. It may also leave deep marks or possible damage on the seat surface. Most Velcro strips for luggage racks have anti slip surfaces that cling to the leather material on your seat.

Step Five - Install the Seat

Put the seat back using a socket wrench or screwdriver. Close and secure the seat. Check for proper clearance and make sure the luggage rack is not in contact with any painted surface. Remember that most luggage racks are made of light metal or aluminum and may cause nicks or scratches.

Step Six - Adjust when Necessary

Move the luggage rack and check for unnecessary movement. Adjust the Velcro strip when necessary. Also check if the Velcro strips do not interfere with the locking mechanism of the seat.

Remember to test the luggage rack before putting a saddlebag or other things on the rack. Start the motorcycle and take a short ride. Observe unnecessary vibration or sound coming from the luggage rack. this could mean the luggage rack is loose and may prove dangerous when carrying luggage at high speeds or on bumpy roads.
