Although it's not mandatory that you have one outfitted to your motorcycle, many people opt to install a motorcycle windshield on their bike anyway. There are several benefits to doing so that extend beyond aesthetic reasons, including the added safety of having another layer of protection and the presence of a piece of acrylic or plastic to block the wind from getting in your face as you drive. Read on for a brief guide on how to install a motorcycle windshield on your bike.
Step 1 - Decide On and Purchase Your Windshield
Choosing the right windshield is a very important part of this process. The windshield must be the right size for your motorcycle, but it also needs to augment and not interfere with the way that you ride your bike. Generally, a good rule is that the top of the windshield should come up to your nose, roughly. This will help it to not obstruct your vision as you ride, but will provide some wind protection. Test out different windshields by examining them at stores. You can also try sitting on or test driving motorcycles with different types of windshields. Professionals can help you find the right one for you.
Step 2 - Remove the Connecting Fasteners to Install the Windshield
Although each type of motorcycle windshield has a slightly different method of installation, most follow the same general procedure. You'll need to begin by removing a few of the connecting bolts and materials that fasten portions of the handlebars together. This is where the base of the windshield itself will sit.
Place the windshield in the proper area of the handlebars, ensuring that the holes in the windshield line up with the spots where the fasteners are. Finally, reattach the fasteners with the windshield in place. This typically requires that you screw them back in or that you fasten them in some other manner. Be sure to follow any additional instructions as appear in the motorcycle windshield installation guide that came with your windshield as well.
Step 3 - Attach Brackets
For additional sturdiness for the windshield, use a bracketing set to attach the sides of the windshield to parts of the motorcycle as well. While this is optional, it will provide a stronger base for your windshield, which will make it less likely to crack or break as you drive. Bracketing sets are available through different auto body repair shops and motorcycle specialty stores as well.
If you have any other questions about the process of installing a windshield on your motorcycle, or if you're unsure that the windshield you're considering will work properly for your bike, be sure to ask a professional for assistance before you continue so that you complete the procedure right the first time.
