How to Install a Pellet Stove Pipe
A pellet stove pipe is an important aspect of all pellet stoves. This pipe provides ventilation to the stove, keeping it working in proper condition. Many people are often put off with the idea of installing the pipes on the stove themselves because of the risk associated with it. The risk involved in the installation process, however, does not mean that it cannot be done by an ordinary do-it-yourself individual such as yourself.
Tools and Materials Needed:
PL vent pipe
Pipe joints
Adapter unit (optional)
Tape measure or any measuring equipment
Two brackets
Installation hardware
Step 1 - Determine the Location of the Stove and the Pipe
Choose a suitable area for the stove and the pipe. It must be someplace where you can easily run a line of pipe from the stove to the exterior of the house.
Step 2 - Take Measurements
Measure the areas on which the pipe is supposed to go through. Basically, this may include areas of the wall and the supposed location of the outside vent. The outside vent may be situated on the roof or on the side of the wall as long as it leads the pipe outside of the house.
Step 3 - Secure the Pipes
Purchase the needed pipes and pipe joints from your local hardware store. Ensure that you are buying the pipes with the right lengths based on the measurements you have made. Also, choose the pipe which you think will best serve your needs. Pellet stove pipes come in different types, each having its own drawbacks and benefits.
Step 4 - Attach the Brackets
Take two brackets and attach them to the ceiling or anywhere where the pipe is supposed to go through. One bracket should be attached on the inside and the other one on the outside. These brackets often come with the package when you buy the pellet stove pipe kit. Follow the procedure stated by the manufacturer on how to attach the brackets if a manual is available.
Step 5 - Assemble the Interior Pipe Line
Locate the attachment bracket of the stove and attach a pipe into it. On the other end of the pipe, attach a joint and then another pipe. The area where the joint is located will mark the first turn of the ventilation or pipe line. Continue attaching pipes until you reach the area where the pipes need to go through to the outside. This can be the ceiling or an area on the wall where the flush brackets are located. Slide the length of pipe on the inside bracket, up through the ceiling or through the hole in the wall until it reaches the exterior part of the house.
Step 6 - Assemble the Exterior Vent
Slide the length of pipe into the flush exterior bracket, adding more pipes as needed. Fasten the length of pipes into the roof using the hardware provided by the manufacturer of the pipe. Insert the exterior vent on the end of the pipe, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Check the building codes of your area before installing any pellet stove pipe for ventilation. Each local government authority often has safety requirements when it comes to installing these pipes or any ventilation equipment.
