How to Install a Self Sealing Membrane on a Deck How to Install a Self Sealing Membrane on a Deck
Self sealing deck membranes create a protective barrier on your deck surface. This helps protect your deck from wear and tear, while sealing in the wood to minimize splintering. The self sealing membranes are simple to apply, with a little time and a few tools.
Step 1 - Prepare the Surface
You need to clean the deck, in order for the membrane to adhere correctly. Sweep the deck well, and clean it with any type of appropriate detergent. Allow it to dry completely.
Step 2 - Mixing the Kits
You can purchase premeasured self sealing membrane material at most home improvement stores. This will be much easier to work with. You still need to mix it on your own. Follow the directions provided, for mixing any ratios that aren't premeasured.
Step 3 - Apply the Mixture
The base agent needs to be poured on to the deck prior to the membrane. This will prepare the surface further for the membrane to seal. Most bases need to be stirred for at least 10 minutes before being poured. Once you've stirred it, you can combine the base with the sealing agent. Use a squeeze bottle to apply the membrane mixture to the deck surface. Allow it to set for at least 24 hours.
