How to Install a Shower Receptor How to Install a Shower Receptor
Among the most important parts of a shower is the shower base. The base needs to have a proper slope that will allow water to run directly towards the drain. Although the floor can be built using mortar and tiles, a shower receptor provides an easy alternative.
Step 1 - Preparations
Determine where to install the shower and install a subfloor if necessary. Unpack the receptor package and check for damage. Transfer the dimensions of the receptor onto the subfloor surface. Ensure that the receptor fits into the framing. The distance from the studs to the receptor depends on the thickness of the finished wall that will enclose the shower.
Step 2 - Installing the Plumbing
Transfer the drain's dimensions to the subfloor on the exact location below the shower receptor drain. Install the drain to the receptor first. Use the drain hole to mark the dimensions on the subfloor. Cut the hole, install a trap, and connect it to either the drainage system or to the main drainage pipe. Following the manufacturer's instructions to install the drain.
Step 3 - Installing the Receptor
Drop the shower receptor into the shower frame. Ensure that it is level with the floor. If it is not level, water will not drain properly.
To attach the receptor to the frame, install the nailing flange into the studs. Drill the necessary holes and tighten the screws. Once the receptor is secured to the frame, connect the drain to the trap below the receptor.
Install the water supply pipes and other materials. Open the water supply and allow water to run through the drain in order to check for leaks. Make sure that the drain is properly installed and tighten all fittings.
Step 4 - Finishing the Installation
To finish installing the receptor, the shower walls must first be complete. Attach the backerboards to the frame. The walls can either be made of tiles or with sealed mortar. Install a shower curb if needed. When the walls are installed, seal the rim of the receptor to the wall with silicone sealant.
