How to Install a Straight Exhaust Pipe

Installing a straight exhaust pipe on an automobile may be easy, but there are other critical factors to be considered. The exhaust systems for the automobiles are designed for providing the sound reduction as well as better performance of the engine.

On that point, there are a few major differences in performance of the exhaust system and sound when using only straight pipes. Besides impairing the engine performance, using only straight pipe in exhaust system is an encroachment of emission laws and noise pollution laws and may lead to penalties in the form of fines.

You have to be careful to make a choice for only straight pipe type of exhaust system for your vehicle and consider the performance difference. There is a low back pressure maintained at which the fumes are emitted when employing a proper exhaust system.

When you use only a straight pipe for exhaust, removing the muffler and catalytic converter, the sound is louder and back pressure is almost wiped out and it enables the partially burnt fuel to escape from combustion chamber creating noise and polluting the atmosphere. At the same time, the power generated by the engine drops down.

Therefore, you should only replace the damaged straight pipe of exhaust in your automobile with a good stainless steel straight exhaust tube. This will improve the performance of your vehicle as you retain the muffle and catalytic converter. You are going to replace only the tail pipe.

If it needs to replace the old exhaust system also, you can purchase the complete kit from the market and install it. In any case you need to fix the exhaust system tail pipe and fit it at the proper position.

Materials and Tools:

-Stainless Steel Pipe  

-Measuring tape

Step1- Setting the Pipe Length:

Measure the distance between muffler inlet and the outlet of catalytic converter using the measuring tape. Allow extra length of 6 inches for inserting the pipe in slip joint fittings.

Step 2- Cutting the Pipe:

Hold the pipe on pipe vice. Mark the length to be cut from one edge with a pencil. Cut the pipe with a hacksaw using a HSS blade on it. Remove the cutting burr with the help of a file.

Step 3- Installing the Pipe:

Insert the ends of the straight pipe between the catalytic converter or carburetor and the muffler by slipping in the ends. It may require installing more than one piece of pipe depending on the type of vehicle. Fix the pipe clamps at the joints on muffler inlet and catalytic converter outlet

Step 4- Aligning and Tightening the Clamps:

Start at the carburetor or at the catalytic converter and ensure all parts are properly aligned. Tighten the clamps firmly. When you are working under your car ensure that it is parked on the level ground. Put some bricks behind the wheels and engage hand brake to ensure that the car cannot move.

Step 5- Testing the installation:

Start the engine and check if there are any leaks or other problems. Fix it, if you find a problem.
