How to Install a Wall Safe
A wall safe is a great option to use to store your small valuables at home instead of using the safe deposit box at the bank. Learning how to install a wall safe is very easy, all you need to do is have the right tools. Once you have decided on the size and style of the safe, the rest of the work should be smooth sailing.
Step 1 – Choose a Good Place on the Wall
The first step is to choose a good place on the wall of your home. Find a place that has no wiring or pipes that pass through the wall. A good place will be somewhere that is hidden from plain view.
Step 2 – The Back of the Wall
If your safe is large, you will need to find a place where the back of the safe will not be noticeable, like in the pantry or closet. Remember both sides of the safe need to be hidden from plain view.
Step 3 – Trace the Area to be Cut Out
Use the outline that you received along with the safe. Place it against the wall and use the carpenter’s level to align the template. Trace out the outline on the wall with a pencil or marker.
Step 4 – Drive a Nail into the Wall
Drive a nail into the center of the area you have marked out. You will need this to serve as a knob to pull out the wall you have cut.
Step 5 – Cut the Opening into the Wall
Use the drywall saw to carefully cut an opening into the wall. If you find some wiring, move it aside and finish cutting the opening in the wall. Use the nail to pull out the portion of the wall you have cut.
Step 6 – Fill the Space
Use the ¼ inch plywood strips to fill in the space between the wall you cut and the back wall. Once this is in place, use the finishing nails to fasten the strips of plywood.
Step 7 – Insert the Safe into the Opening
Take the safe and insert it into the opening. Make sure it fits in well by pushing it flat against the back wall.
Step 8 – Open the Safe
Use the 3 digit combination and the key to open the safe.
Step 9 – Remove the Shelves
Remove the shelves from the safe to be able to drill holes into the studs.
Step 10 – Drill Holes
Use the drilling machine and drill holes to the wall studs.
Step 11 – Fasten the Safe
Use the screws provided to fasten the safe securely to the wall.
Step 12 – The Back Wall
If your safe is a large one, you will have to follow steps 3 to 6 on the other side of the wall.
That’s all you need to do to have a wall safe installed in your home.
