Weight benches are essential pieces of equipment for an in-home gym. Actually, you can start your home gym with installing a weight bench. You may buy the parts at a local store and assemble them at home in the room you have chosen as your home gym.
Step 1 -- Choosing a Weight Bench
Choose a suitable bench for your needs and the space that you have available.
Step 2 -- Preparing the Parts
After having decided on the room for the bench, lay out all the supports and padding. You will start assembling at the head and end with the seat. Set the socket set and the bolts, washers and nuts at hand. Make sure these are of an appropriate size.
Step 3 -- Assembling the Base
Lay the foot supports for the bottom in a triangle. The head of the bench will have two foot bases and the seat will have one. Put the bolts in the holes of the supports and screw on washers and nuts thus connecting the supports for the head-base to the cross bar base.
The nuts should not be too tight, otherwise your work will be a lot more difficult; you will return to these later. The back-frame bar should be connected with the base support for the single foot of the seat using bolts with washers and nuts. The base frame will now have a T shape.
Step 4 -- Connecting the Upright Supports
This is the part where having a work partner is necessary. You will need to place the upright supports at the head of the base. While one person keeps one upright support at one side, the other should connect it with bolts and then screw in the washers and nuts.
Step 5 -- Attaching the Padded Bench
Attach the bench to the back frame bar under the upright support. The barbell hooks should then slide in the holes at the top of the upright supports.
Step 6 -- Tightening the Nuts
Check if the supports are symmetrical. Tighten all the nuts.
Tips for Buying a Weight Bench
Before buying a weight bench, there are several criteria you can use when you compare the existing products:
- Think about the space you have. If space is a problem, try to find a folding bench. There are some models which fold down flat and have wheels so they can be pushed under a bed.
- Check how sturdy the benches are. Some benches can support more weight than others.
- Check the padding. If there is insufficient padding your back will start to hurt.
- Ask the vendor how many positions the bench can incline in. The number of exercises you can perform depends on this.
- The length of the bench should be the same as the length of your body from the top of your head down to your buttocks.
