How to Install an Extractor Fan Speed Controller

A very important tool, the extractor fan speed controller, is often underestimated in rooms, much like what it controls, the extractor fan itself. The reason why the extractor fan is so necessary is because it removes all the stale or foul odors in a room, most often the bathroom. However, as necessary as the extractor fan speed controller may be, it is not too difficult to install. In fact, even though steps include wiring, there is little to no confusion in knowing what to do with the wires because of how straightforward it is. Less confusion means more safety, so do not fret.

Step 1—Safety

The first step is safety, so turn off the electricity that powers the ceiling fan of the soon-to-be-worked-on room. Note that the first line refers to the actual circuit breaker in the electrical panel of the house, and not the more convenient switch on the nearby wall.

Step 2—Locating Wires

First, the fan speed control switch on the body of the fan may be located. If so, it may either come in the form of a kit, which would then be located close to the fan blades. Then, remove any screws securing the kit from the fan. Note that the mentioned kits often come with fans that already have lights on them. However, if there is no visible kit, then said switch should be the pull chain on the fan. Next, remove the bottom cap of the fan.

Now that the site where the wire connections for switch controls are located is accessible, note the speed control. The speed control switch will have a few wires, anywhere from three to four, or so, coming off. Now use the touch type voltage tester to test for voltage.

Step 3—Getting Started

After having tested for voltage, the next step is to remove the screw-on cap. Note that this cap secures the speed control switch to the fan itself. After removing the cap, the switch can now easily be pulled out of the fan. So, pull the wires projecting from the switch, be it three, four, or how many. In some cases, there may be a pressure clip holding the bundle of wires, and, if so, twisting said clip may make pulling the wires easier. However, if the wires are just too adamant, then cutting the wires is acceptable. When cutting the wires, one should write down which wires go to where so that the wrong wires are not accidentally cut. Also, stripping about three quarters of an inch of insulation of the wires can make the cutting process easier.

Step 4—The Crux

Now the proper wire can be inserted into its proper slot regarding the speed control switch. After removing the screw-on end cap from the switch, insert and then pull chain and threaded nipple through the hole where a previous switch may have occupied.

Step 5—Finishing Up

Now, secure the switch by fastening back all necessary screws. Then, carefully, force back any and all wires wherever possible. Next, test the speeds by turning the circuit back on.
