Installing car interior lights can be done on your own. It will take less than 30 minutes if you have all the components. Read on to find out how.
Step 1 – Buy a Kit
The first step in installing car interior lights is to buy the right kit. Go to a car parts store and look for the correct kit. A car interior lights kit generally comprises of 1 front dome light and 1 rear dome light. Door lights, light for the glove box and visor and trunk lights.
Step 2 – Prep Work
Park the car in a well lit area. Make sure you have enough space to work. Maintain a clutter free work area.
Step 3 – Door Lights
Start with installing the door lights. Locate the door lights. As soon as you open the car door the light will be at the bottom end of the door.
Step 4 – Remove
After you find the light slot, look for the groove. You should insert a screwdriver with a flat head into this groove and pop the light unit out. Just press on the light and nudge it up to remove it from the connection.
Step 5 – Install
Now that the old light is removed you will have to install the new light. From the kit take the light bulb meant for the door. Hold on to the flat side of the bulb and insert the other end to the slot. Now place it back into position. Make sure the whole unit is enclosed by the cover.
Step 6 – Glove Box
Open up the glove box. Use a screwdriver to take off the lamp housing. Now remember to disconnect the connection by removing the plug. Install the festoon. Reconnect the wire or plug and check if it is illuminating.
Step 7 – Trunk
Open the trunk up. Locate the light housing. Remove the housing with the help of a screwdriver. Disconnect the wire and proceed to install the festoon. Connect the plug and place the housing back in potion.
Step 8 – Visor Lights
You will find the visor lights right above the windshield. A festoon will be available in the kit. Pull out the housing, remove the old one and replace it with the new festoon.
Step 9 – Rear Dome
Move to the rear end of your car. You will spot the rear dome. With your hands pull down the unit that contains the dome. You now have to insert the bulb in the holder. The metal pins on the bulb should touch the holder. This will ensure that the connection is secured.
Step 10 – Front Dome
Locate the groove on the front dome panel. Once you pull it apart with a screwdriver you will spot a pressure clip. Press the clip and the unit will come down revealing the lights that need to be replaced.
Step 11 – Replace
Remove the cover of the lens and replace the bulbs. Make sure that the contact between the bulb and the holder is established.
Step 12 – Final Step
This completes the installation of the car interior lights. Make sure that all the connections are made accurately. If any of the lights are not working it is an indication that the connection is not accurate.
