How to Install End Molding

Using end molding is a great way to transition from laminate or hardwood to another type of flooring or door. End molding looks like an "L" shape and it fits over the edge of the laminate or wood to give it a finished look. This is a commonly used transition piece when coming up to a carpet, an outside door, or a fireplace. They keep the edge of the laminate or wood from being exposed and help hold the laminate in place. Installing end molding is a simple process that can be done without any assistance from a professional contractor. Here are the basics of how to install end molding yourself.

Measure the Opening

Most of the time, the laminate or hardwood is going to meet at a small door. Sometimes, however, it will meet in the middle of a very large opening. You need to know exactly how wide the opening is so you can make a detailed cut on the end molding. Use a tape measure to get an accurate measurement to make it the smallest interval you can.

Mark Your Measurement

Once you have the appropriate measurement, mark the molding to the right dimension for your cut. Use your tape measure to measure the appropriate distance on it. Take your pencil and make a mark on both sides of the molding at the appropriate measurement.

Make the Cut

Using a table saw is the easiest method for cutting the transition, however, you could use a different type of saw if you needed to. Line up the mark you made as accurately as you can underneath the blade. Make a quick, precise cut all the way through the end mold.

If you are dealing with a laminate transition, be careful with the top layer. Laminate transitions have a film on the top that provides the laminate with a color. Therefore, if you do not cut it cleanly, you can see the edge of the film pulling off of the molding.

Install the Molding

Installing the molding will be different depending on which type of transition you have. Some end molds have a metal track that goes down into the floor and some do not. If you have a metal track, you can nail it down into a wood subfloor and then place the end mold into it. If you are on a concrete subfloor or do not have a track, you can adhere it to the transition with liquid nails to the floor. This will do an excellent job of holding the transition securely in place.

Finish Up

You may need to apply a bead of wood caulk around the edge of the end mold where it meets the wall. If you used the liquid nails method, you should leave something heavy on the end mold overnight. This will ensure it dries with the end mold in the right position.
