Installing exterior plantation shutters on your home can protect the window and also allow you greater control over privacy, sunlight and even temperature. You can use these exterior plantation shutters much as you would any kind of hinged, louvered shutters; using a hinge, you open and shut them, but you can also pull the shutters themselves away from the window if you choose, depending upon the amount of sunlight you want in your home.
Step 1 - Measure the Window
You must measure the window where you will be installing the exterior plantation shutters. Make sure you get all of your lengths correct, as you will be relying upon these measurements when you purchase your kits. Take both width and height measurements, and also draw a sketch of the window itself so you can calculate the total area you need for your exterior plantation shutters.
Step 2 - Assemble the Shutters
Most shutter kits will provide the basic flat shutters and a kit which you will need to use to assemble the shutters. In this kit are hinges, screws, catches, magnetic strips and other parts. Follow the instructions to fit all these pieces together so you have one single shutter part for each of the frames. This will make it a lot easier to fit them onto the windows later. You should also paint or varnish them if you need to.
Step 3 - Install the Shutter Frame
You now need to install the shutter frame. Fit it to the outside of the window around its frame and screw it into place as necessary. Don't add all of the screws yet; just fit enough to support the frame. The rest need to be screwed into the window frame when you have fitted the shutters properly.
Step 4 - Fit the Panels
Take out your hinge pins and line them up with the shutter frame. Hold the shutters up to the hinge pins. Adjust the shutters so they fit into the frame and then mark where the hinges need to go. Take down both panels and hinge pins and screw them together in the place marked. You can then hold up the shutter again, and install the shutter panel into the frame. Repeat for the rest of the panels. Make sure that the exterior plantation shutters open and close, and then fit the rest of the screws to the window frame and secure the panels to the window.
