How to Install Kitchen Wall Cabinets Part 1 How to Install Kitchen Wall Cabinets Part 1
Installing kitchen wall cabinets is not a difficult task. With proper instructions, time, and effort you will be able to put up new kitchen wall cabinets on your own.
Step 1 – Measuring and Marking the Wall
Measure the wall using the measuring tape and check if it is level. Once you have measured the walls, mark the areas using your pencil where you want to place your kitchen wall cabinets. Consider the layout and design of the wall cabinets when marking and measuring the walls so you will have the right guidelines once you start screwing the cabinets in place.
Use the front frame of the wall cabinets when you measure the wall and not the dimension of the box. This is because there is generally an overhang on the front frame compared to the box.
Measure the distance from the ceiling to the top part of your wall cabinet to ensure that it will not be too high or too close from the base cabinets.
Step 2 – Marking Level Lines
There are some kitchens that do not have even floors or walls. To determine which areas are uneven, use a level and mark these areas. Check to see the high points and low points of the kitchen and mark these as well. By doing this, you will be able to properly plumb the cabinets and determine which part of the kitchen is best to install the wall cabinets.
Step 3 – Locating the Wall Studs
You can then start locating the wall studs. If you have already installed a base cabinet, it will be easy for you to locate the studs.
However, in case you have yet to install the base cabinets locate the studs in the walls by using a stud finder. After you have determined the location of the studs, mark it with a pencil or hammer a small nail in each area to mark the spot. Only locate studs that the wall cabinets will cover.
Step 4 – Installing Ledger Board
After locating the studs in the wall, you now need to put in a ledger board which will help support the new kitchen wall cabinets temporarily.
Measure the height of the wall cabinet from the floor to the area where the bottom of the cabinet will be. Draw a horizontal line on this area. This is where you will install the ledger board.
Once you have identified the height of the wall cabinets from the floor, screw in the ledger board. Make sure that the ledger is aligned with the studs you have marked on the wall.
Step 5 – Hanging the First Wall Cabinet
Putting in the first wall cabinet is an important step when installing kitchen wall cabinets since it will determine where the other cabinets will be placed. If you have corner cabinets, start with this first.
To install a corner wall cabinet, put a wood furring strip on the bottom edge of the cabinet line. Mark the corner of the wall to the first stud and then measure from the stud to the inside of the area where the cabinet will be installed. Raise the corner cabinet and secure it to the wall. Make sure that the cabinet is level.
