How to Install Premade Workshop Cabinets

Workshop cabinets are generally used to store the items that one needs while working. These items are kept out of sight in the cabinets and brought out when they are required. They provide a neat and tidy appearance to the workshop as clutter can be avoided by keeping the items aside when they are not needed. It also helps in ensuring the items do not gather dirt and you do not have to clean the items daily.

Workshop cabinets can be mounted on the floor where you can easily reach the items. If you want to make it child-proof, the cabinets can also be mounted near the top of the wall so they are out of the reach of children. In such a case, it also does not interfere with your working space. A cabinet can be, in some cases, used as a stand for a countertop from which one can work.

Pre-made cabinets are now available in all shapes and sizes at home improvement stores like Lowes, Sears, and Home Depot. They are very easy to install and come with instruction manuals.

Step 1 - Determine Size

Go to the local hardware store and select the cabinet type, size, and style you think will fit with your needs. Note down the dimensions of the cabinet on a piece of paper. Make a rough sketch of the cabinet indicating the dimensions.

Step 2 - Draw and Adjust

Go back to your workshop. Mark the exact dimensions of the cabinet on the wall. Also, indicate where the cabinet will be placed on the floor. You can make note of any adjustments that may be required.

Step 3 - Buy

Go back to the shop and purchase the cabinet.

Step 4 - Paint the Cabinet

Change the color of the cabinet to match the room décor. If required, you can also stain it to give it a finished look. It is easier to do it at this stage than later when it is mounted on the wall or has a counter top placed on it.

Step 5 - Acclimatize

Let the cabinets sit in the room for a minimum of forty eight hours before installing them. This will ensure there is no shrinkage at a later stage due to any room-specific conditions like humidity and moisture level.

Step 6 - Install Upper Cabinets

If you are planning to install both upper and floor cabinets, start work with the upper cabinets first. Mark the area where you want to install the cabinet. Take the measurements from the floor and see where you will place the bottom-most of the cabinets. With the help of nails and studs, screw in the cabinet into the wall.

If the cabinet is very heavy, ensure there is somebody who can hold the cabinet and assist you in placing it. Check to see the cabinet is aligned vertically as well as horizontally. If there is any discrepancy, ensure the alignment is proper. Once the first cabinet has been installed, repeat the same process for the other cabinets also.

Step 7 - Install Floor Cabinets

Put the floor cabinets next to the wall. Select a corner from where you will start working and work across the length of the cabinet. Check that the cabinet top level is at a regular height and does not appear to be irregular. Check the sides of the cabinet also. If there is any irregularity, make use of shims. Screw them in a corner and check that the level is regular. Readjust as required.
