How to Install Soffit Boards How to Install Soffit Boards
Soffit boards are panels installed beneath the roof’s overhang. They’re used to hold pieces of the roof together using siding. When soffit boards are properly installed, the ventilation of the home is improved which prevents exterior swelling and contraction. You can even install decorative soffit boards which help to beautify the exterior of your home. Soffit boards can begin to fail or become loose and will need to be replaced. This job can be expensive if you hire someone to do it, but you can follow the simple steps below to remove and replace soffit boards on your own.
Step 1 – Assess Damage
Take a look at your home from the exterior. The soffit boards along with the fascia can wear with age as rain and extreme temperatures get their hands on it. The word can easy begin to distort, bend and even rot. Some of the damage could be found behind the boards, so it is a great idea to remove and replace any soffit boards that appear to be worn, bowed, discolored or swollen.
Step 2 – Removal
Soffit boards are held in place by F-channel stripping that is found below the fascia. In order to remove the soffit boards the fascia and F-channel stripping also have to be removed. Use a small pry bar and insert the curved end under the bottom of the board to remove. Apply minimal leverage to bring it off the home. You need to do this slowly and with care because any wrong move can damage the roof of the home. Remove all of the worn or damaged soffit boards.
Step 3 – Channel Installation
The overhang of the roof supports the channel and the new F-channel has to be installed directly beneath the overhang’s edge. Place the new channel up to where the old one was. Position it so that it lines up with the rafters. It needs to fit in place exactly where the old one was. Attach the new channel to the rafter with a hammer and nails.
Step 4 – Siding
Soffit boards install under strips of siding. Use the circular saw to cut the siding and install with a hammer and nails at the opposite end of the new channel. This creates a small area for the soffit board to slide into.
Step 5 – Make Soffit Board Panels
The soffit boards have to be the same length as the channel but somewhat narrower. Use the measuring tape to measure from the fascia’s edge to the end of the channel. Use the saw to cut the soffit boards into panels that are a centimeter smaller than the measurements taken.
Step 6 – Installing Soffit Boards
Slide the soffit board in place under the lip of the siding strip, and then use the square to ensure it is flush with the fascia. You may need to adjust the boards to line up with the channel’s V-groove. When satisfied, nail it in place and then cover with fascia board.
