How to Lay Patio Paving Stones in Sand

Patio paving stones can create a beautiful and elegant look to every side of your home. You can install patio paving stones around a barbecue grill or create a whole area in which to relax. In order to prevent patio paving stones from moving you need to have them placed in sand. This is not hard to do and the following article will show you how it is done.

Step 1 - Map the Area

Select a place for your patio paving stones that is relatively flat, but not over any utilities. This can be water, sewage, electrical, and even phone with the advent of fiber optics. This is important as you will be digging and do not want to damage any of these. You also do not want to run the risk of having your patio paving stones dug up to fix any of these things. Map out the perimeter for your patio using the stakes and twine. You could also use spray paint.

Step 2 - Prepare the Site

Use the spade to remove two inches of soil plus the thickness of the patio paving stones. Place the soil in a wheelbarrow to either be discarded or used elsewhere. Remove any stones or roots that may be present in the area. When your site is cleaned; tamp down the soil. Use the level to make sure that the site is flat and even. Remove soil as needed to achieve this. You can also wet the area down to help with this process. Roll out the landscaper’s fabric on the soil it covers the area and trim the excess. If you need to use more than one piece then make sure they overlap. The fabric prevents weeds and grass from growing between the stones.

Step 3 - The Sand

Sand is used to prevent the patio paving stones from moving as you walk on them. Use enough sand in the site so that it is about two inches deep. Spread the sand around the area and then use the 2 x 4 to even it out. Use the ruler to determine the depth of the sand. You want it to be even in all areas. Sprinkle the sand with water and then tamp it down flat. Use the level to make sure it is even. Let the sand dry for a day.

Step 4 - Place the Patio Paving Stones

Place the first pacing stone in the corner of the site making sure it is pressed against the side. Put the level on top of the stone and then use the mallet to tap it into the sand. Continue until the stone is in place and level with the ground. Place the remaining patio paving stones in the same manner until the site is full. Dump sand on top of the stones and then use the broom to push the sand into the cracks.
