How to Limit Color Fading in Silk Curtains

If you have silk curtains in your home, you have most likely made a sizable monetary investment when you purchased them. They require special care to limit color fading, and keep them looking new as long as possible.

You Will Need

  • Home dry cleaning kit
  • Laundry soap for silk
  • Lingerie bags
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Window tinting
  • Fabric softener sheet

Step 1: Keep Clean

It is very important to keep your silk curtains clean, so you don't have to launder or dry clean them as often, which will fade the fabric over time. Keep the windows with the curtains closed, to avoid dirt and grime blowing onto them. Also close heat vents, if they are under the windows where these curtains are hanging.

Vacuum the curtains on a regular basis, using the dusting wand on your vacuum cleaner. Be sure to get into all of the creases and folds.

To freshen them, take them down and put them in the dryer, on low or no heat, with a fabric softener sheet. This will also help remove dust and dirt.

Step 2: Clean Properly

Check all garment care labels on the curtains, and follow their instructions. Do not wash if dry cleaning is suggested. If they are washable, put them in lingerie bags, to prevent snags and wash in a very mild detergent to protect the dyes from fading.

Step 3: Protect From Sunlight

The ultimate step to prevent fading is to put window tint on your windows where they are hung. This is available in rolls. You can also install windows shades or blinds, to close when the sun is on those windows.
