Pool deck pavers are a good choice of ground cover for the poolside area. They’re both an affordable and durable choice for your pool side. Proper maintenance helps to enhance the beauty of your poolside. It also extends the life of your pavers. Maintenance basically requires you to clean regularly and apply sealant periodically. With the guide below, you can ensure that your pavers always remain in good shape.
- Water hose
- Chlorine bleach
- Rubber gloves
- 6-inch masonry brush
- Concrete stain remover
- Long handled scrub brush
- Paint sprayer
- Paint roller with extension handle
Step 1 – Light Cleaning
Use a broom to frequently clear dirt and debris from the pavers. Piled up dirt easily results in stains which spoil the appearance of your pool deck. Pull out any weeds that may have sprouted between the pavers. Hose down the pavers and mop up excess water. It is best to clean the pavers frequently to help prevent mold growth.
Step 2 – Apply Chlorine Mixture
Clean your concrete pavers thoroughly once a month with a pressure washer. This helps to remove fungus that encourages mold growth. Mix chlorine and water in a bucket in a ratio of 1:4. Dip your masonry brush into the solution and scrub the pavers. Work in small sections to get the surface well cleaned. It helps if you allow about 10 minutes for the chlorine mixture to work on the pavers.
Step 3 – Rinse
Use you pressure washer to thoroughly rinse the pavers with clean water. Soak up the excess water with a dry mop then let the pavers air dry.
Step 4 – Preparation for Sealing
It is a good idea to seal your concrete pavers every 1 to 2 years. This helps to protect them from the effects of the elements and extends their longevity. It also helps to prevent stains, which makes your maintenance work easier. Inspect the pavers before you seal for any damaged sections. Repair cracks and replace those that are badly damaged. Prepare a solution from household detergent and water in a bucket. Scrub the pavers with a long handled scrub brush. Use a concrete stain remover to clear any stubborn stains. Rinse the pavers with a pressure washer and dry with a mop. Keep the pool deck area out of bounds while you apply sealant.
Step 5 – Application of Sealant
Pour some sealant into the paint sprayer for easy application. Begin at one corner of your pool deck area and spray a thin coat of sealant over the pavers. Move downwards as you spray until you complete one section. It helps if you have somebody help you spread out the sealant with a paint roller especially along the edges. It will ensure that work proceeds quickly and efficiently. Proceed to spray the adjacent section from top to bottom. Proceed in this manner until you’ve applied sealant over the entire deck area. Allow the sealant to dry for the required time.
Step 6 - Subsequent Coats
Apply a second and third coat of sealant over the pavers in the same way as you applied the first coat. Let the pavers dry completely before you can use them.
- Be sure to check the weather forecast before you seal your pavers. Avoid work on days when wet weather is likely.
