How to Maintain Electric Fence Power Consumption How to Maintain Electric Fence Power Consumption

Having an electric fence always involves power consumption of one kind or another. Although there are solar, battery and straight electricity, you want to maintain a low power consumption. Here are just a few of the most common ways to do this.

Tools You Could Need

  • Plier tool for electric fencing
  • Heavy gloves
  • Weed cutter and tree trimmer tools
  • Transducers
  • Gate handles
  • Battery

Step 1 - Checking the Fence Line

The life of your battery or the extent of the voltage used will depend on how many times the fence is grounded. Grounding occurs when an animal touches the fence or weeds and trees are on the fence. When the fence is grounded a charge is dropped. You need to walk the fence line periodically to inspect for weeds, trees and bushes that may need to be cut off the fence line. You will also need to inspect the fencing for sagging wires. You can use a tensioner to tighten the line.

Step 2 - Maintaining the Equipment

Periodically you need to check for transducers that are being weather-beaten. These will cause a loss in power across the grid. You need to maintain the power source. If you are using a DC source you will need to know when to replace the battery. Solar batteries need to be replaced periodically according to manufacturer's recommendations.
