A bed skirt can add to the style of your bedroom. In just a few simple steps, you can add a bed skirt to your room, without spending a fortune on a new sheet set.
Choose a Design and Color
Your bed skirt needs to add emphasis to your current bedspread or duvet. Choose a color which is complementary and if the sheets are solid, choose a muted design to help accentuate your bed color scheme. Go to your local fabric store to see what designs and colors are available if you’re stuck on what to choose.
Step 1 - Measure the Bed to Determine Fabric Needs
To determine how much fabric you need, take a measuring tape and measure the edges of your bed. This is much easier when you take the mattress off the bed frame. Measure the sides from the back to front, front side to other front side. Then measure the length you want the bed skirt to be. Add a few inches to this measurement to ensure you have enough fabric when you sew.
Buy the fabric for the bed skirt with these measurements. Remember, more fabric is better than too little so buying twice as much fabric as you think you need leaves room for error. Also, the additional fabric can be used for pillow cases or shams.
Step 2 - Use a Sewing Machine to Create the Skirt
Take a flat sheet you don’t need and cut it to the measurements of the bed frame, with a few inches to allow the bed skirt to attach to this sheet. If you don’t have a spare flat sheet, use a cheap piece of fabric from the store. No one is going to see it. Pin the fabric you bought to the edges of this flat sheet and run the fabric through your sewing machine in straight lines for the sides of the bed and then the front part of the bed. There’s no need to sew a bed skirt on the back of the bed since many beds don’t have room for a skirt there.
Alternative Step 2 - When No Sewing Machine is Available
When you don’t have a sewing machine, you can simply leave the pins in place and place the new bed skirt in place, replacing the mattress to cover the pointy parts. No one will know any differently. Or you can use a two sided table to attach the two pieces of fabric to each other. In either case, iron the bed skirt before placing on the bed to ensure it looks sharp.
Adding a bed skirt is a simple and cheap way to add some charm to your bedroom. And since it is easy, you can change the skirt as often as you like.
