Protect the purchase of your grand piano and prevent scratches and stains by using a grand piano cover. Rather than spend money on this simple piece of fabric, follow the steps below to create your own.

Step 1 – Take the Measurements

A grand piano is quite large, and the shape is unique and unusual, which makes creating a grand piano cover an interesting project. Taking the measurements along each curve of the grand piano is not sensible. The trick is to think of the grand piano as a box. It has areas that are wider than others. Measure the length, from the the longest area of the piano to the end. Determine the width by starting at the widest area and pulling the tape measure across. You also need the height of the piano, from the top of the piano to the floor.

Step 2 – Purchase Fabric

Pick a fabric that is easy to work with, like one that has a little of stretch to it. Heavy fabric, like denim or cotton duck, is difficult to work with and can easily break needles while you are sewing. Also get enough muslin to fit your measurements.

Step 3 – Make the Template

Use the measurements that you took in Step 1 to cut the muslin. Make sure the top of the grand piano is closed as well as the keyboard and then drape the muslin on top of it. Make sure there are no creases or wrinkles, and then use the fabric pen to trace the dimensions of the top. Now, trace the sides of the piano, breaking it off into three parts. Lastly, gather the muslin up to fit the form of the keyboard, and draw the lines which will also include the front of the piano. Remove the muslin, and cut each piece out of the muslin, but leave the full length intact. Cut away the keyboard section into the 3 pieces that make it up which resembles a simple step.

Step 4 – Sew the Piano Cover

Place the fabric you are using face down, and place each piece of the muslin template on top of it. Trace the pieces, and then cut them out. On the side pieces, fold the bottom edge in 5/8-inch, pin it and then sew it to create a hem. Pin the other pieces together, and sew them together. Fold the sides in toward the center, and pin them together and sew. Pin and sew together the keyboard section, and then pin it to the center and sew it in place to finish the grand piano cover. Turn the cover inside out, and slide it over the grand piano.
