How to Make a Mesh Pool Safety Cover How to Make a Mesh Pool Safety Cover
You have decided to cover you pool with a mesh pool safety cover. This mesh cover helps prevent leaves and debris from getting into the pool. It also helps the sun come through, so algae will be able to grow when getting into the warmer months. Also when you reopen your pool in the spring you will be able to open it earlier opposed to a solid cover which does not allow any sunlight in to warm the cold pool water. When you go to purchase the mesh make sure that it is a true safety mesh. Safety mesh when laid is usually a non-slippery surface and allows the water to drain through it.
Step 1 - Measure Your Pool
Take out your measuring tape and measure the length of the pool. Then measure the width. You want to make sure that you measure your pool at the longest length and the widest width.
Step 2 - Purchase the Materials
Head the local craft and fabric store to purchase wire mesh material. This will probably be a special order, unless you are lucky enough to find a large warehouse. You can also check your local home improvement store, but they likely will not be able to purchase the mesh in large sheet or rolls like a fabric store can. Order or purchase material in the dimensions you need. You probably will not be able to buy the material in the width of your pool, so you will need to order a double or triple length to meet your sizing requirements.
Step 3 - Layout the Material and Sew
Lay the material out on a flat surface and pin the lengths together. You will worry about the shape later. Sew the all the lengths together to make the right width. Then sew the panels to make the right length. You will need to use a sewing machine as this is a lot of work. Use a stitch that will stitch tight and straight. Avoid stitches that pull or gather the material. You also need to use nylon thread in this application.
Step 4 - Lay Material over Pool
In order to get the best measurement, lay your stitched material over your pool. Position it so that the material ends sit on the deck around your pool. On each corner of the mesh, place a stone for stability. Now, take your pins and pin the design of your pool. Leave a 1" allowance for seams. Once you have it fully pinned, cut the excess material away.
Step 5 - Baste Your Seams
Take the material back over to your sewing machine and baste the seams together. Now you have the pool cover shape.
Step 6 - Attach the Springs
Attach the springs around the mesh material. Review the instructions that come with the springs to make sure you are fastening them onto the material correctly.
Step 7 - Attach the Springs to the Anchors
Your deck should have anchors around the poolside. As you lay out the pool safety cover over the pool, attach the springs to the anchors so that it creates a snug fit.
