A portable reverse osmosis filter can improve the quality of water that you and your family drink. This system was developed within the past century mainly to convert seawater into drinkable water, but these days, it’s widely used in everyday life. Portable reverse osmosis filters are convenient to carry and can clean water wherever you are. Follow the simple steps below to create your own filter.
Step 1 - Choose and Buy Reverse Osmosis Filter
There are two certified companies that produce high quality filters: NSF and EPA.Select your filter according to the chemicals that are in your water. You should take a read through the installation sequence detailed in the owner’s manual because filter sets can be slightly different from manufacturer to manufacturer even though the process of filtering water will be the same. In the reverse osmosis filter system, highly concentrated water is pushed through the pre-filter, which removes many types of large molecules. Afterwards, the water goes through the selective reverse osmosis membrane to filter out dissolving salts, minerals and many other organic impurities, odors and tastes from the contaminated water. The water then comes out perfectly clean on the other side.
Step 2 - Connect the Filter to a Faucet
Remove the aerator from the faucet spout in your filter. Install and tighten the new aerator furnished with your filter system directly to the faucet. If the new aerator can not be attached directly to your faucet, use an adaptor and a gasket that fits your faucet. Tighten the replacement aerator by hand or by using a large clamp. Tighten it enough to avoid any leakage, but be careful because over-tightening may strip the adaptor or faucet.
Place the reverse osmosis filter in the desired location. Your filter is compatible with many utility sinks and outside house sinks. Insert the spout or hose into the spout housing of the filter, and push it down firmly.
Step 3 - Insert Cartridges and Membranes
Loosen the connector fittings by twisting counter-clockwise. Use the pincer to carefully push the membrane into the socket until completely in, and connect it to the required tubing.
Cartridges are less sensitive. Wrap them with Teflon tape if needed and install them into the system. Put on security locks if available on your portable reverse osmosis filter.
Step 4 - Flush with Water
Turn on the water, and check all connectors and tubing for leaks. Flush 4 to 6 gallons of water through the filter before use to rinse out the sanitizing agent - a necessary step to ensure a sanitary system for your use. Make sure to only use cold water because hot water can damage the osmosis membrane. With that set, you've made progress in making your own portable reverse osmosis filter.
