When it comes to adding value and character to a home, a multi-level wood patio deck is a popular option among many homeowners today. The multi-level design of a wood patio and deck is one that requires a great deal of planning in order to make sure that you get the right shape, adequate weight distribution, and measurements as to how things will fit. There are plenty of ways that you can do the designing. These range from simple pen and paper to elaborate software pre-loaded with hundreds of templates.

Step 1 - Determine Location of Wood Patio or Deck

Before you can do any planning on the multi level deck design you will need to figure out where it will be located. You may have an idea of where you would like it to go, but there may be obstacles in the way that make a multi level deck an impossibility. Check local codes and zoning for any regulations concerning multi level decks and where they can be properly built. Once you have done this research, you will have a better idea of where to build the deck.

Step 2 - Measure Location

With the location of the deck in mind, measure the surrounding area and begin to stake out the perimeter of the deck. This most likely will not be the exact location of footing piers, or the overall outline of the deck, but it will give you something to work with when doing the rest of the design.

Step 3 - Draw Multi Level Wood Patio Deck Design

Use a piece of drafting paper and lay it on a flat surface. Mark the location of your home and any surrounding landmarks, buildings, or other obstacles on your property. Then mark the measurements you took in the prior step. This drawing should be somewhat to scale so you can see how things will look together. Use a straight edge to make straight lines.

Step 4 - Use Computer Software

If you are looking for a more professional looking blueprint to work from, then you can use some computer software for drafting. This type of of software has plenty of different ideas for someone who is planning out a multi-level wood patio and deck structure. Some of the more high end software will also let you know what you need in order for the structure to have the strength it needs. While the software can be an initial expense, the savings of building the structure the correct way is a major justification for the cost.

Step 5 - Plan for Extras

A multi level deck provides the homeowner with plenty of opportunity to add several extras. Think about if you'd like to see a pergola, partial roof, flower boxes, built in speakers, lights, benches, or maybe a reinforced area for a hot tub. When using the software you will be presented with these options and more.

Step 6 - Allow for Materials

Once the design is made you will then need a materials list. Again, the drafting software will be a great help in this as it will generate a complete list for you.
