You must use an asphalt driveway sealer if you have an asphalt driveway. If you do not keep it sealed, it can start to crack and break under pressure sealer yourself. Many people prefer to make their own driveway sealer as it will be more effective than a store-bought solution. Follow the simple steps below to make an effective asphalt driveway sealer.

Step 1 - Obtain Supplies

To begin, you must get the necessary supplies for the sealer. You will need boiled linseed oil, which can be difficult to find. You may be able to find it in a hardware store or in a home improvement warehouse, or you can order some online. It typically comes in one-gallon quantities, so get several gallons in order to cover your entire asphalt driveway.

You will also need to get either kerosene or paint thinner to mix with the linseed oil. Both of these materials will work, so you can choose whichever one is the cheapest or most readily available.

Step 2 - Prepare

Working with paint thinner or kerosene will create some serious fumes, so you must take some precautionary measures with adequate ventilation, and fire protection being foremost. Wear protective gear while you are working with these materials, including protective gloves, goggles and a mask over your nose and mouth it possible. You should also set up the materials in a well-ventilated area, such as in a garage with the door open. You need to make sure that you are very careful with these materials because they are highly flammable.

Step 3 - Mix the Sealer

Once you have the necessary ingredients, you need to mix them together. Pour 1 part of linseed oil into a 5-gallon bucket as well as an equal part of kerosene or paint thinner. If you are using a 5-gallon bucket, you may want to pour 2 gallons of each material into the bucket.

After you have the ingredients in the bucket, you need to thoroughly mix them. You can do this with a stirring rod or you can use an electric drill with a stirring paddle attachment. Make sure that the substance is mixed well before you try to apply it.
