Making bamboo window blinds is a fun project that can also save you money. This type of window covering is perfect for an apartment or a large home. Here's what you have to do.
Step 1 - Cut the Bamboo
Cut the bamboo stems into strips or slats. Peel or skin the slats and disinfect them with sulfur powder. Make the sulfur powder into a solution before applying it to the slats. Disinfect them for at least 10 to 12 hours.
Step 2 - Dry the Bamboo
The next step is to dry the bamboo by laying it outside under the sunshine. The amount of time you have to dry the slats depends on the type of bamboo you have. For example, green bamboo holds a lot of moisture and may require more drying time.
Step 3 - Attach the Slats
Once the bamboo has dried, coat the slats with adhesive and join the bamboo strips together. In addition to applying glue, you'll have to use a pneumatic press to attach the bamboo together. The press will form a rectangular bamboo plate that is then sliced into multiple slats.
Step 4 - Seal the Slats
The slats may become a little rough after this step. Smooth the edges by grinding them, and then cover them with a base coating. You will then need to apply a second face coating on top of the first base coat. Once the slats have been covered twice with coating, punch the bamboo with holes to fit the pull cords.
Tips
Drying the bamboo goes faster if you stand the slats up to dry. Before purchasing adhesive, make sure it is designed for bamboo specifically. When you use the pneumatic press, be very careful and follow all safety precautions. Wear safety goggles and gloves, and don't forget to wear a mask when applying adhesive.
