Hanging tea light holders are not only practical, saving space, but they also add personality to the area they are exposed in. Hanging the tea lights will give more light. If you want to make some hanging tea light holders, you will need just a few supplies, which you can buy or recycle.

Step 1 – Prepare the Soup Cans

Remove all labels and clean the soup cans using detergent. If the labels are difficult to remove, soak the soup cans for up to 1 hour and then remove the labels. If needed, use a wire scrub to eliminate the labels and the remaining glue. If you want to skip this step, simply apply a clean sheet of colored paper on the soup can. In this case, you don’t need to paint the can. Cut the paper to the size of the can and glue it to the can using craft glue.

Sandpaper the sharp edges on the rim of the can. Apply duct tape on the rim, but only on the inside of the can, to ensure that the can’s edges will not injure you while you place or remove the tea lights.

Step 2 – Paint the Cans

Make sure the cans are completely dry before you start applying paint primer. You may skip the primer, but the primer will ensure that the paint will adhere to the surface better. After the primer is dry, apply some acrylic paint. You may paint the cans in several colors, making sure they are matching your home or garden décor. You may also paint several patterns, lines or dots on the cans.

Step 3 – Drill Holes

With a drill and a 1/8-inch drill bit, make holes for the hangers approximately half an inch below the rim. Then, drill other holes in a pattern that you choose, such as in a straight line, spirals or heart shapes. You may even change the size of the drill bit to obtain holes of various sizes.

Step 4 – Prepare the Hanger

Use craft wire and cut one hanger to the length you prefer. Add 2 more inches of wire, which will be inserted into the holes.

Step 5 – Install the Hanger

Insert the cut craft wire in one of the holes you drilled for the hanger. Use pliers to create a wire loop on the inside of the soup can and make sure the hangers will hold the soup can. Do the same with the wire in the other hanger hole.

Step 6 – Hang the Tea Light Holders

Check if the hanger is sturdy enough. Insert tea lights in all the holders that you have prepared and hang them in your home or garden.
