How to Make Homemade Toilet Bowl Cleaner How to Make Homemade Toilet Bowl Cleaner
Save money and the environment by making your own toilet bowl cleaner to keep your toilet sparklingly clean and freshly scented. Natural cleaners will leave your toilet just as clean and smelling better!
Step 1 - Weekly Maintenance
To make a toilet bowl cleaner for an average toilet that has been well-maintained but needs a disinfecting, sprinkle baking soda and spray lemon juice into the toilet bowl. Spray the lemon juice all around the inside of the bowl. Allow to sit for 1 hour, then scrub it with a toilet brush. Flush after finished cleaning.
Step 2 - Removing Tough Stains
For tough stains that have been allowed to build up for a while, try substituting vinegar for the lemon juice. It won’t leave as nice of a scent, but it will be more productive on toilet bowl rings.
Step 3 - Preventing Mold
If you live in a moist, humid environment, and have difficulties with mold gathering inside and out of your toilet, using Borax mixed with lemon juice or vinegar will help to prevent against the growth of mold or mildew. Make a paste with the borax, mixing 1 cup of borax with 1/2 cup of lemon juice in a small bowl. Rub the paste wherever mold is problematic, dampening the area with water before applying the paste. Allow to sit for a couple hours before scrubbing and flushing. You could also use vinegar instead of lemon juice, delivering a stronger scent but stronger cleaning punch. In this case, making a paste isn’t necessary just sprinkle the borax and spray the vinegar wherever needed, using about twice the amount of borax than vinegar.
Step 4 - Herbal Disinfecting
To leave your bathroom smelling better while disinfecting naturally, use essential oils or fresh herbs to create sweet-smelling disinfectants. To make a herbal cleaning disinfectant, mix 2 cups warm water, several drops of natural soap and around 30 drops of an antiseptic herb or mixture of herbs made into an oil like lavender, tea tree, or Thieves ( a several antiseptic herbal combination). Spray on and in the toilet and wipe down. This can also be used as a general cleaner in the home.
Another way of herbal disinfecting is to simmer fresh lavender over the stove for a 1/2 hour. Pour into a colander to separate the herbs from the water. Pour into a spray bottle, add a couple drops of soap and use just as above.
