Lace cafe curtains are an inexpensive solution to creating privacy in a room without having to sacrifice sunlight by covering only the bottom section of the window. They are among the best options for a kitchen or a bathroom and not only are lace cafe curtains easy to produce but they are also cheap to make.

Step 1 – Measuring Up

The first thing you will be doing is to decide how far down you want your curtain to go on the window and how far up you want the ruffle to rise across the window. Once you have decided that, use a measuring tape to measure up the desired height and the width of the window (measurement A). Note down these measurements and add an extra 2-½ inches at the top, 5 inches at the bottom for a hem. Next decide on the length of your ruffle (measurement B): it should preferably be 8 inches or longer. Remember to add 2-½ inches for casing and another 2 inches for the hem.

Step 2 – Cutting Up

Once you have taken note of the measurements you can mark them on the fabric with chalk. You will be cutting 2 pieces of fabric with measurement A, and a second fabric with measurement B.

Step 3 – Fix Hems

At this point you should have 3 pieces for your curtain. Start by making a hem on all 4 edges of each fabrics. If you do the hemming at the top of the curtains and the ruffle you will find it handy when you are trying to do the casing. You can use a sewing machine to work faster. To do the hemming you should turn over ½ an inch at each side, pin them down with sewing pins and then use a sewing machine to stitch them. You should to this process one side at a time.

Step 4 – Making the Casing

Once the hems are ready you can start with the casings. You should also have made a hem at the top where the casing should now be made. Get the top side of the curtain and turn over 2 inches for the casing. Hold the casing in place by using sewing pins and sew it in place with a sewing machine. Remember to sew exactly at the edge of the fabric so that the rod will go in the casing easily. You should repeat this step for both curtains and the ruffle.

Step 5 – Finishing up

At this point you are ready. You can insert the first curtain rod in the curtains which will go at the top of your window and then insert the second rod in the ruffles which will be hung at the height chosen in Step 1.

This is one of the easiest methods to create lace café curtains. Remember that you can make as many curtain pieces as you wish. Moreover, if you do not fancy lace, you can use any textured material of your choice.
