How to Make Lighted Pinecone Arrangements for Christmas Centerpieces

Christmas centerpieces are available for sale in a large variety of forms and styles. If you want to add a more personal touch to your Christmas table, you can make your own decorations and centerpieces. Pinecone arrangements are good choice for a centerpiece: they are not expensive (you can even find pinecones outside) and they resemble small Christmas trees.

You Will Need:

  • Foam wreath support
  • Pinecones (ideally in different sizes)
  • A piece of heavy plastic
  • Glue
  • Spray paint (red, white and green)
  • Potpourri
  • Christmas decorations (can be round or in different other shapes)
  • 1 tall thick candle
  • Fir tree sprig tips or other small green sprigs
  • Red or green thick ribbon
  • Floral wire

Step 1 – Get the Supplies and Materials

Purchase all the items you need. The number of pinecones you need depends on the size of the centerpiece you wish to make. If you decide to pick the pinecones yourself, you should store them in the refrigerator overnight, in zipped plastic bags. This destroys the bugs that live inside the pinecones.

Step 2 – Cut the Plastic Piece

Cut the plastic piece to the exact size of the foam wreath support you bought. Use glue to stick the foam wreath support to the plastic piece.

Step 3 – Paint the Pinecones and the Wreath

Paint spray the wreath and the pinecones in red, white and green. You may also opt for metallic colors or leave the pinecones in their natural color.

Step 4 – Apply the Pinecones and Fir Tree Sprig Tips

Apply the pinecones on the foam wreath using hot glue. It is important to cover the foam wreath entirely. Start placing the larger pinecones first so that you can use smaller ones to fill the gaps in the end.

When you are done with gluing the pine cones, insert small fir tree sprig tips between them. This can also help you fill some voids in the wreath you could not fill with pinecones.

Step 5 – Place the Candle

Take the candle and tie a bow around it using the ribbon. The candle has to be at least 5 inches higher than the top end of the pinecone wreath. Make sure the candle is not too large, as otherwise the arrangement can look disproportionate.

Place the candle in the middle of your arrangement and glue it to the plastic piece.

Place the ribbon halfway down from the candle top.

Step 6 – Add Other Decorations

Put a thick layer of potpourri inside the pinecone wreath, around the candle. Make sure the plastic piece is not visible anymore. The potpourri will give a nice scent to your room. Place the Christmas decorations around the candle; you can use some floral wire to tie the decorations to the fir tree sprig tips.

Warning

You should be extremely careful when you light the candle in the centerpiece. Do not leave it unsupervised. Do not light it again if its length is close to the rest of the arrangement.
