How to Make Modern Spaces with Polycarbonate Panels

What You'll Need
Polycarbonate panels
Closure strips
2x4 lumber
2x6 lumber
4x4 lumber
Wall flashing
Vertical round molding strips
Beam fasteners
Plastic compatible screws
Circular saw

Polycarbonate panels are a form of plastic that is manufactured as a stronger substitute for glass and acrylic. Constructing a space of polycarbonate panels will make it more resistant to ultraviolet rays and durable in extreme weather as it is virtually indestructible. This is why these panels are used for greenhouses, decks and sun-rooms. While creating a space with such material can be extremely beneficial for a number of reasons it is still important to consider your safety when beginning this project.

Step 1 - Take Measurements

Before you get any of your materials you want to carefully measure for your new modern space. Doing this will indicate how much of the materials you will need and will also help in planning the construction.

Step 2 - Construct the Foundation

You need to have a stable foundation for your modern space if you wish for it to be a permanent establishment. You do this by first digging a square or rectangular hole that will be the length and width of your modern space. The hole should be approximately 1 foot deep. Cut and attach 2x6 lumber to form a rectangle or square that will snugly fit into the hold you just dug. Also attach 2x6 lumber horizontally inside the rectangle or square you just made. Attach all of these firmly with beam fasteners. Measure and cut the 4x4 lumber to the height you want your modern space. Attache four at each corner then two more in the middle of the longest edge of your foundation (if you constructed a square shape you may not need these last two if it is small enough).

Step 3 - Pour the Concrete

Mix the concrete and pour the wet concrete into the hole ensuring that it is level with the top of the hole you have dug and wait for it to dry.

Step 4 - Finish the Framing

Construct the rest of the framing using the 2x6 and 2x4 lumber. Make sure that you place 2x4 rafters and beams where support is needed. Construct your roof into a slight steeple using 2x6 lumber as beams and the 2x4 for rafters. Attach all of these firmly with beam fasteners. Keep in mind that you will need to frame a door and areas for ventilation while you are finishing this step.

Step 5 - Attach your Polycarbonate Panels

Plan how you will be attaching your polycarbonate panels to the frame of your modern space. This will help with how you need to cut your panels and how many you will need. When you cut your panels clamp it to a sawhorse and use a circular saw to cut it. Make sure you wear goggles when doing this. Use the drill and screws to attach closure strips to all areas of the frame so that you can attach the panels to them. Using plastic compatible screws attach the panels to the frame using the drill. Attach wall flashing in between panels once all the panels are in place.

Step 6 - Finish the Modern Space

Attach your door and the ventilation grates and you are finished.
