A slatted bed, or a bed with platform bed slats, is a relatively easy type of bed to build on your own, so they often appeal to people who enjoy making their own furniture or people who want a custom bed to fit their specific needs. Slatted beds have a rectangular frame and support the mattress with a platform made from slats, or boards, that run horizontally across the open interior of the frame. The following set of step by step instructions will give you all the information you need to make a bed with platform bed slats.

Step 1: Make Rectangular Frame

Find a very flat spot to work, such as your garage or your driveway, and lay the two 4 by 4 boards that are as long as you want your bed to be wide side by side. Lay the two 4 by 4 boards that are eight inches shorter than the length you want your bed to be in between the first two boards so that they make a rectangle. Make sure they are flush at the corners, and screw them into place. Throughout the whole process of making this bed frame, you will need to drill pilot holes in the wood before you put in screws. This will ensure that the screws go where you want them to and don't split the wood. Put in two screws at each corner of the frame so that the boards are held in place.

Step 2: Install Platform Bed Slats

Lay your bed slats in the open interior of the frame at equal intervals. They should lay horizontally so each end is touching one sideboard on the frame. Screw them in place with two screws in both ends.

Step 3: Install Support Boards

Screw the six, 6-inch 4 by 4 boards to the bottom of the frame so that the frame can stand on them.

Step 4: Make Head and Foot Boards

Attach four of the 16-inch 4 by 4 boards to the top of the frame at both the head and foot of the bed, making sure not to attach them directly over any of the support boards. This would make them hard to screw in. Screw the remaining two 2 by 4 boards to the tops of the 16-inch 4 by 4 boards.

For certain types of mattresses, such as memory foam mattresses or futons, a bed with platform bed slats is needed to prevent the growth of mold on the bottom of the mattress. The platform slats allow for airflow under the mattress, which would otherwise get damp and grow mold. It is a great choice for people who want to build their own furniture because it is relatively easy to make.
