Christmas wreaths are mostly round shaped, but you may also make yours into a special shape, such as star or rectangular shaped. A star shaped Christmas wreath is not complicated to make, you will only need a few supplies and decorations.
Tools and Materials:
- Wire and floral wire
- Wire hangers
- Glue gun
- Pencil, ruler and paper
- A drill
- Evergreen branches, twigs, leaves or hay
- Cones, cinnamon sticks and other natural decorations
- Figurines or other decorations
Step 1 – Create the Frame
While you can purchase ready made wreath frames in craft stores, you may also make the frame at home. You will need wire or some wire hangers.
The star shape will be more complicated to make than a round wreath frame.
First, establish how many corners the star will have. Most commonly, Christmas stars will have 5 corners.
Draw a star about the size you would like your star wreath to be. Use the ruler to make sure that the star is symmetrical. Draw the top corner first. Using this pattern, you can create a star out of wire. Use a single piece of wire or tie several pieces together.
Step 2 – Lay the Base Covering
A base covering is needed to cover the wire and may be made of evergreen branches, twigs, hay or leaves.
Lay the covering on each side of the star and use a glue gun or wire to fasten the covering to the wire frame. You may use both wire and glue, to secure the joints of the star.
Apply the leaves or branches generously, to make sure the wreath frame is no longer visible.
Trim the branches or leaves that stick out.
Step 3 – Decorate the Wreath
When it comes to decorating the wreath, you may use a number of decorations such as:
- Pine cones
- Cinnamon sticks
- Ribbons, bows or golden/silver thread
- Christmas tree decorations
- Painted nuts
- Terracotta figurines
- Small framed photos or drawings
The decorations may be placed on the wreath using floral wire. If the decoration is bulky (i.e. nuts), you may need to use glue to secure the decoration to wreath.
Step 4 – Make Final Adjustments
When you finished decorating the wreath, you will have to see if the star looks even or if you need to make any adjustments such as trimming the branches or twigs or add some more decorations. You may also decide to remove some of the decorations, if the wreath looks too packed.
Test if the star is sturdy enough and whether the decorations and the base covering stays put. If needed, use some wire to fasten the loose pieces.
Hang the wreath.
