Making your own garage door screen is an easier project than you may realize. It requires a certain amount of tools, a bit of time, and the right instructions. You do not need to be a pro to make your own garage door screen.

Below are the step-by-step directions and the tools needed to complete this type of project. Follow these directions and you should be able to construct your own handmade garage door screen.

Step 1 - Measure the Door Frame

The first thing you will need to do is to take your tape measure and take the measurements of your door frame. Accurately measure the opening by starting your tape at the outer edge of one door frame and leading it across to the outer edge of the other.

After you have done that, you will want to add 3 inches to both sides of the measurement. That final number is the measurement you will use to cut your screen material.

Step 2 - Cut Your Screen

Now that you have your measurements in hand, take your screen material and lay it out. Take your scissors and cut your screen to meet the size of your measurements.

After you have your cut piece, you can take the ends and fold them in about 1½ to 2 inches. This is what will be your hem of the screen. Take your stapler and staple the hems. You can add weights into the hems if you wish. That will help keep your screen down and in place on windy days.

Step 3 - Attach the Fastener

Now that your screen is cut and the hems are taken care of, you can take your fastener and attach one side of it to the bottom inside of the door itself. Use super glue or another form of heavy-duty glue to secure it into place. The other side can be put on the screen you have just hemmed.

Make sure to match up the areas where they will meet before attaching both sides of the fastener to make sure it turns out aligned in the end.

Step 4 - Roll It Up

Now you can take your screen and roll it up. Attach straps to the hook and loop fastener on the inside of the door. This will keep your screen up and out of the way until you need to use it.

Step 5 - Let It Go

When you are ready to use your newly made screen, all that needs to be done is to open the garage door and release the straps that are holding the screen up. Let the screen fall into place. The weights should keep it from moving too much.

Now you should be able to use your garage for get-togethers, and everything else. A simple and fast project to protect you from some weather, and still enjoy the outdoors.
