A rubber mallet is a type of hammer that is used to deliver a softer blow than a tradition metal hammer. Most often rubber mallets are used to tap pieces of a construction into place or to hammer metal because they do not leave marks like a metal hammer. The head of a rubber mallet is made with a firm rubber and is a rounded block shape to evenly distribute pressure. Although rubber mallets can be purchased at most home improvement stores, you may find it handy to be able to create your own. You will find instructions below on how to create your own rubber mallet in two easy steps.
Step 1 - Prepare a Tennis Ball
Use a utility knife to cut an opening in the tennis ball. Make sure the opening is large enough to insert the hammer into. Do not cut the opening too large, you want the hammer to fit snugly inside. Place the hammer inside the tennis ball.
Step 2 - Secure the Ball
Place the sock over the tennis ball. Pull the sock tight around the tennis ball and secure to the hammer using a rubber band. Twist the rubber band around the base of the tennis ball until it is secured nice and tight. You can trim the sock if desired to create a neater appearance. You are now done, you have created a rubber mallet using items you can find around the house.
