One of the most common places to put a trashcan is inside a cabinet door. Many different homeowners will place the trashcan within the cabinet itself. Others mount the trashcan to the inside of the cabinet door. Not only does this free up some space in the cabinet, but it also makes throwing away garbage much more convenient.
Mounting a trashcan on a cabinet door is a matter of placing it on a small shelf with a metal bracket to keep it secure. There are several kits on the market today to make this process even easier.
Step 1 - Inspect Mounting Kit
Any time you buy a kit for any home improvement project, you need to inspect it before doing any type of work. By doing this you accomplish three things. You make sure that all the parts that are supposed to be included are there. If you need to have any additional materials, tools, or supplies you are able to get them before starting the project. You are becoming familiar with the way that the pieces will be installed.
Step 2 - Remove the Cabinet Door
While you can mount the trashcan on the cabinet door with the door still attached to the cabinet face, it is much easier to do it with the door off. Use your screwdriver and unscrew the hinges from the cabinet face. This makes lining up the door much easier than if you removed the hinges from the cabinet door itself.
Step 3 - Mount Bottom Shelf
Many of the trashcan mounting kits come with two pieces. The first is a shelf that the trashcan will rest upon. This shelf is mounted with small 'L' shaped brackets that go under the shelf. Place the shelf about 1 1/2 inches from the bottom of the cabinet door edge. Center it in the middle of the door and make sure that it's level. Place the brackets under the shelf and mark the screw holes. Drill in a pilot hole with the drill. Secure the bracket to the door and then set the shelf on top of it. Attach with another screw that secures the bracket to the shelf.
Step 4 - Install Wire Bracket
Another part of the trashcan kit will be a small wire bracket that keeps the trashcan secured to the door. Place the trashcan on the shelf and set the wire bracket where it will allow the can to rest on the shelf. Mark the screw holes. Drill in pilot holes and then screw the bracket to the cabinet door.
Step 5 - Replace Cabinet Door
Replace the cabinet door back onto the cabinet face by screwing the hinges back into the original position. Place your trashcan inside the wire bracket and rest it on the shelf. Open and close the cabinet door to make sure it will work correctly.
