Closet doors are a great place to hang a full length mirror especially if you wish it to be hidden behind the door. Hanging a mirror on a door leaves wall space for other things like paintings, posters or desks. Mirrors are not as light as they may seem and hanging one on a door is tricky because the chance of them falling is increased every time the door is opened. The following article will show you how to easily and safely mount a mirror to closet doors or any door that you may want a mirror.

Step 1 - Determine the Mounting Location

For you to be able to properly mount the mirror you need to know how big it is and the right place for the mirror to be anchored. Use your measuring tape and measure the size of the mirror. If the mirror is not as tall as the door then you will be more interested in the width of the mirror. With the measurement in mind, use the measuring tape to center the mirror on the door. Take the pencil and place a dot to represent each corner of the mirror.

Step 2 - Figure out the Door Type

The type of door determines how the mirror will be mounted. Knock on the door and listen for a slightly muffled sound and an echo. If you hear either of these then the door is hollow. If it sounds solid, then door is not hollow. You can use the drill to confirm this. If the drill goes in the door without much aid then the door is hollow.

Step 3 - Mounting the Mirror

Hollow Door: If the door is hollow and the mirror is going to be on the door forever then you will be using the strong glue. Turn the mirror over and apply a generous about of glue to the back. Pay special attention to the edges of the mirror and the very center. Let the glue set for several seconds until it becomes tacky. Place the mirror on the door between the marks you made and firmly press on the mirror.

Solid Door: If the mirror has a frame you will simply make pilot holes with the drill in the frame. Hold the mirror to the door and, starting at the top left; attach a screw through the pilot hole and into the door. Finish the top first then attach the bottom. If the mirror does not have a frame but has mounting holes you can avoid the pilot holes but when you attach the mirror do not tighten the screws too much.

Plain Mirror: If the mirror you have has no frame or mounting holes then you will have to build a wooden bracket. Cut four triangles the same size out of the piece of wood. Glue the wood to the corners of the mirror leaving enough wood to drill pilot holes and to screw in place.
