When home office desks become cluttered they defeat their purpose of providing a organized work place. If you find yourself overwhelmed by stacks of paper on your desk and unable to find what you need, you are probably not utilizing your desk as the efficient organizational tool it should be.

Step 1. Start With the Basics

Whether your desk is as simple as a couple of filings cabinets separated by a piece of plywood or as sophisticated as a custom-designed unit your working comfort must be a priority. Invest in a chair that is easy to settle into and is height adjustable to fit your lap correctly under the desk. Lighting should also compliment your work style. Work late into the night? A desk lamp works better than overhead lights. Are you a day person? Position that desk near a window to get the most natural lighting possible.

Step 2. Control those Paper Piles

The first impression you have as you enter the room sets the tone for what will be accomplished in a work period. Approaching a desk piled high with unaddressed paperwork makes you want to turn around, close the door and never look back. Treat paper as you would a trip to the grocery store. Once home, grocery bags are emptied quickly and each item goes into its space on a shelf or in a pantry. The biggest clutter offender in a home office is junk mail. It is estimated that the average person will receive over 50,000 pieces of mail in a lifetime. Those bills, mail offers (junk) and personal correspondence needs to be dealt with daily.

Step 3. Empty Those Desk Drawers

More often than not desk drawers become a dumping ground for stuff we don't want to deal with. Or worse, a drawer for pens and pencils becomes a magnet for a million small, unnecessary items. Assign a purpose to each drawer and ban all other items. A drawer devoted to stamps, envelopes and a check book prevents lost time searching for those commonly used items. Step 4. Take Advantage Of Technology

You may not need paper and office supplies at all! You're probably not taking advantage of the extensive organizational and storage tool that is your computer. Basic software tools make it possible to manage your office entirely through the computer. Pay bills online. Scan and file all your important paperwork in the computer, which empowers you to destroy the hard copy, saving both time and physical filing space. To-do lists, appointments, correspondence can all be centrally run from that electronic screen. Paper can be a thing of the past.

Step 5. Quick Clear At The End Of The Day

Before the end of every work day, simply clear off the desk.  Throw away the doodled sticky notes. File away any finished business. Replace pens and paper into their rightful drawe, and take that coffee cup back to the kitchen. A few minutes today will create a more productive tomorrow.
