How to Paint a Brass Fireplace Screen How to Paint a Brass Fireplace Screen

What You'll Need
Fine grit sandpaper
Tack cloth
Drop cloth
Heat resistant primer spray
Grill or auto paint (your choice of color)
Heat resistant Clear Coat

A brass fireplace screen is attractive, but sometimes we want a change. You can easily change it to a color to match your room. This can be done in a day with the right supplies from a home improvement or paint store.

Step 1 - Preparation

Take your fireplace screen to the garage or outside. Sand the clear coat off of the screen. This will help the paint to adhere well.because the paint will stick better to a rough surface. Wipe down with a tack cloth to remove residue. Next, lay the fireplace screen down on the dropcloth to apply primer.

Step 2 - Primer

Apply the heat resistant primer to one side at a time and allow it to dry before turning it over, then apply to the other side, again allowing it to dry. You will then be ready to apply the paint.

Step 3 - Paint

Apply the paint in the same manner as the primer, doing one side at a time and allowing it to dry before turning over. When finished with the paint and it is completely dry, you'll want to add clear coat to give it extra protection and a nice sheen.

Step 4 - Clear Coat

Simply spray the clear coat on each side spraying in a sweeping motion to be sure it is evenly covered. Allow to dry once more, then place in front of your fireplace and enjoy your efforts!
