How to Paint Ceramic Floor Tiles
Instead of putting on expensive rugs you can paint your ceramic tile floors if you want to rejuvenate your kitchen or bathroom floor. Painting ceramic tile floors require a special type of paint such as Alkyd paint. Below are the materials that you need along with the instructions on how to paint ceramic tile floors.
Step 1 - Clean the Ceramic Tile Floor
Clean the ceramic tile floor that you want to pain using an abrasive cleaner. Remove as much mildew as you find with the scrub brush. This is an essential step as this will affect the end result of your paint job later.
Step 2 - Repair Damage Ceramic Tiles
If there are damage ceramic tiles, repair or replace before proceeding with the paint job. Re-grout the ceramic tiles that are lose.
Step 3 - Sandpaper
Use a fine grit sandpaper and sand over your ceramic tile floor. This step is necessary especially if your ceramic tiles are glossy. After sanding the ceramic tiles, clean the floor using a broom. Make sure that all the ceramic dusts are cleaned away as it can damage the paint job later on.
Step 4 - Tape the Grout
If you want to leave the grout unpainted you can cover the grout lines using painter’s tape. A painter’s tape is usually blue in color and is available at any hardware store. However, if you want to paint the grout along with the tiles make sure that the grout is fully dry before painting.
Step 5 - Tape the Wall Edges
Using the same painter’s tape, tape over the areas you do not want to paint like wall edges and wall trimmings. Allow at least 2 inches of painter’s tape between the edges of the ceramic tile floor to the bottom of the wall to avoid paint splatters.
Step 6 - Apply Coat Primer
Before actually painting your ceramic tile floor you need to apply paint primer. You can choose between an oil-based or a shellac-based primer depending on your preference. Allow the paint primer to dry. Apply an additional coat of paint primer and then allow the new paint primer coat to dry. You may have to check the ideal drying time of the paint primer that you are using since various paint primer manufacturers require varying drying periods between each coating.
Step 7 - Sand over the Paint Primer
Using a fresh set of fine-grit sandpaper, lightly sand over the ceramic tile floor to remove the bumps that often occur after applying paint primer.
Step 8 - Apply the Paint
Apply a thin coating of Alkyd paint on your ceramic tile floor beginning with the corners using a paintbrush. Proceed with painting the rest of the ceramic tile floor using a roller brush. Apply a couple more coatings if you want a darker color. Always remember to allow each coat to dry completely before applying another coat. Apply a coating of water-based urethane floor finish and allow the entire paint job to dry for at least a day.
