Painting synthetic stucco will require you to use a specific type of paint. Stucco does not necessarily need to be painted, but if you do choose to paint your synthetic stucco, you will want to take the proper steps to ensure that the paint will last and resist chipping. Let these steps guide you toward professional results.
Step 1 - Assess Your Surface
First, you will need to asses the stucco surface that you are painting. Stucco should have at least 4 months to settle before you begin to paint it. In addition, you should choose to paint your outdoor stucco during a season when the temperatures are mild and the air is relatively dry. Early fall is generally a good time to paint outdoor stucco.
Step 2 - Prime Your Stucco
The next step in the process is to prime the stucco that is to be painted. Pour the acrylic primer in to one of the paint pans. Using the paint roller, place it in to the paint pan and coat it fully with the acrylic primer. Roll the paint roller over the stucco wall that you wish to be painted. Make sure that you coat the wall thoroughly to ensure that all of the holes and designs are covered completely. Make sure to let the primer dry for at least 24 hours before moving on to the next step.
Step 3 - Apply Paint to Synthetic Stucco Surface
Now, you are ready to paint your synthetic stucco surface. Fill a clean paint pan with the acrylic paint that you wish to use. Using the paint roller, dip it in to the paint pan and coat the roller thoroughly with the acrylic paint. Roll the paint roller over the synthetic stucco surface. Your initial motions over the synthetic stucco surface should be in a V motion, and using a vertical motion to repaint the surface area that you have missed. Make sure to apply adequate pressure when painting the surface so that you may ensure that every hole and design on the surface is covered. Wait at least 24 hours for the surface to dry before moving on to Step 4.
Step 4 - Apply Second Coat of Paint to Synthetic Stucco Surface
After you have let the first coat of paint dry for at least 24 hours, it is now time to apply the second coat of paint to the synthetic stucco surface. You will begin as you did before by pouring the paint in to a paint pan and making sure to coat the paint roller thoroughly. Roll the paint over the synthetic stucco surface, making sure that you coat the surface completely to ensure that you have filled in any spots that you may have missed in step 3.
