An RV skylight needs to be properly cleaned and maintained to ensure that it is in good condition. In time you may notice that the skylight may leak, so it will need to be patched up as soon as possible, to prevent the damage from becoming unmanageable. It is rather easy to do this repairing job. Just follow the steps highlighted hereunder.
Tools and Materials
- Alcohol wipes
- Glass cleaner
- Soft cloth
- Plastic scraper
- Caulk gun
- Silicone caulk
- Rubber Roof coating strips
- Stiff brush
Step 1: Cleaning and Inspecting the RV Skylight
To begin, you have to clean the skylight. Wipe the skylight with a soft cloth and a glass cleaner, and clean the border well with some alcohol wipes. A stiff brush will also help you to brush away any dirt that is a bit beyond reach or in small gaps. While doing so, you can better inspect the skylight and the cause of the leaks.
Step 2: Removing Deteriorated Areas
In most cases, a leak is caused by rubber or caulk that has worn away or deteriorated. Use a plastic scraper to remove the hardened rubber or caulk.
Step 3: Repairing
Once the area has been properly cleaned and prepared, use a caulk gun to seal the border of the RV skylight. Try to fill in the edges well and as neatly and evenly as you can. Wipe away any excess caulk, and allow it to dry well. Finally, attach a rubber roof coating strip to finalize your work and improve its longevity.
