Painting paneling might seem like a complex task but you can do the work yourself quickly and easily. You will need to prepare the walls before you begin in order to achieve the best results.

Step 1 – Preparing the Area

Turn off the power source to the room. Lay your old sheets over the floor near the walls to protect it. Remove all wall decorations, along with their hangers. Be sure there are no nails or screws left behind. Remove any outlet or switch plates from the wall. Put all of the screws and plates in a secure place. Use your caulking to fill any cracks or holes. Remove any excess caulking with your putty knife.

Step 2 – Cleaning the Walls

Mix one gallon of warm water with ½ cup of white vinegar in a bucket. Immerse a cleaning cloth into the solution and squeeze out any excess liquid. Use the cloth to clean the walls. Allow the paneling enough time to dry completely.

Step 3 – Roughening the Paneling

Use 100-grit sandpaper to roughen the paneling. Be sure to work the sandpaper in the same direction as the wood grain. Use a damp cloth to remove the sanding dust from the walls. Allow the walls to dry.

Step 4 – Priming the Paneling

Use a paint brush to cut in a latex primer on the paneling. Cover the rest of the paneling with a paint roller. Allow the primer to dry completely.
